The Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1) runs along the Anglet coastline away from car traffic: allow 10 minutes to Biarritz, 15 to Bayonne. Anglet’s beaches are easy to link up, with bike parking available near each one. To get off the tarmac, the Pignada Forest offers waymarked mountain bike loops, shaded by pines, away from the road.
At around 27 km², Anglet is the largest commune in the Basque Country: real territory for cyclists. It is also a town you can’t avoid: you almost always pass through it travelling from Biarritz to Bayonne, or the other way round.
Two spots not to miss: the Halles des Cinq Cantons and the Quintaou market. It is best to go by bike: parking gets tricky by car at market times.
Want to go further? The coast road leads to Bidart then Guéthary in 30 to 40 minutes on an electric bike, given the terrain.
Good to know: the promenade de la Barre is pedestrian-only. To ride along the coastline by bike, take the cycle path running alongside it, not the promenade itself.
